John Neal stepped off the ship in Portland to face an angry mob. Neal - a 19th-century novelist, itinerant penman, portrait painter and first critic of American art - was on his way to his new home in the big city of Baltimore. But first he came to Portland (then known as Falmouth) to visit his mother, a Quaker.
