Quaker History / Religious Freedom / Penn, William // Tragedia en la escuela: cómo es el mundo de los amish / Clarín.com / Barcelona / Spain / E.U. /4-Oct-06//El surgimiento de los amish es una historia con muchos cismas. Religious Faith / Quaker-Amish / Restorative Justice / Emmi, Elaine / Learning to forgive / Deseret News / Salt Lake City / UT / USA /7-Oct-06//... Elaine Emmi, a local Quaker and president of the state's Interfaith Roundtable, said she sees quite a bit of similarity between the Amish and the Quakers in dealing with injustice and forgiveness. She watched a father she knew personally forgive his adopted son for killing their wife and mother.
The man worked with the legal system to avoid the death penalty for the killer and to seek healing. "It was an amazing case where you can't bring those back who are gone, but hopefully you can heal the people who are here. It was that sense of 'Let's work through the issue and not just lock him up and throw away the key,' which doesn't provide rehabilitation or allow for change."
The concept of "restorative justice" goes to healing beyond retribution. "You have to embrace that person and draw them back into the community ... . We really do feel much like the Amish in restorative justice and creating harmony within a community," she said, acknowledging that healing "just takes a very long time. You have to know that you are going to suffer through bouts of pain."
Quakers practice mentally "holding in the light" a person or problem, praying for resolution and healing. She hopes tragedies like the Amish have experienced — and their reaction — will help bring about questions and discussion. ...

Mr. Weinacht hunts, but he opposes the gun ordinance. He noted Quakers’ peace-loving roots and cited local public opinion.

“It simply doesn’t resonate with a felt need,” Mr. Weinacht said, predicting that the ordinance would not survive a series of public meetings this fall. “Nobody’s scared of anything. This is not exactly crime central.”

He did not disparage Mr. Jett for the idea, however.

“It’s a fair question: How do we adequately prepare for an emergency?” Mr. Weinacht said. “I think the inherent contradiction is how do you say we’re for community, and at the same time, the guns are cocked?” ...

If (people) can learn to hate they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite." May Haviland, a member of the Society of Friends showed the power of love to surprise and overpower evil. One night, she opened the door of her room and was astounded to see a burly, dark-haired man rifling her bureau drawers. Quietly she entered the room and closed the door behind her.
