Her anti-war stance also is well known; Baez was raised a Quaker. Her one fling with marriage was to war protester and organizer David Harris, who was jailed for draft resistance during the Vietnam Era. They divorced in 1973.

Less well known is an Iraqi connection that Baez shares with Key.

Her father, world-renowned physicist Albert Baez, who had refused on moral grounds to participate in the Manhattan Project to develop an atomic bomb, lived all over the world. In 1951, he moved his family to Iraq, where the 10-year-old Joan was deeply impressed by the hardships of ordinary people.
