Cox, a fourth-year medical student, went to Nicaragua in January through a program offered by ProNica, a nonprofit Quaker organization that provides help to the people of Nicaragua.

"I was the first medical student to volunteer through ProNica and to spend as long as five months at the clinic," said Cox, 26, during an informal talk for friends last week after she returned to Redlands.

Cox chose the program because she wanted to work with women's health issues.

JACKSON TWP. - The tornado that ripped through northern Stark County in 2002 took a relatively light toll on most businesses and even improved traffic at one. But one didn’t find new life until this summer.

“It was seriously like losing a friend,” said Kathleen Houston, who operated High Mill Park with her husband, John, for 20 years.

High Mill Park never reopened after the tornado. With about $50,000 in uninsured damages, the Houstons didn’t even try to reopen in 2002. Friends from Jackson Friends Church helped them take a shot at reopening on a limited basis in the summer of 2003. But the park didn’t make it....
