Quaker Schools / Quaker History / Guilford College / Greene, Nathanael / Author David McCullough to speak on Nathanael Greene / Greensboro News Record / Greensboro / NC / USA /3-Nov-06//... He finds Greene fascinating, stressing the military would reject him today because he was lame, with a noticeable limp.

He was a fighting Quaker from a prominent family. His break with pacifism, however, bring expulsion from his Rhode Island meeting house. Without any military training, he became a general at 32 after making himself an expert on strategy and tactics through books.

"He was brilliant,’’ McCullough said. "He was the best general we had. He was better at tactics and strategy than Washington. Washington acknowledges that."

While Greene did well in the war’s northern campaign with a unit that stood out for its discipline, he served in Washington’s shadow. In the South, he was commander of American forces. He turned defeat into victory at Guilford Courthouse in 1781. The winning British suffered losses that later led to their surrender at Yorktown.

McCullough believes if Greene hadn’t died at 41, he would have "made a superb president. He was very intellectual and had the salient qualities of leadership.’’

Although his Quaker upbringing discouraged higher education, Greene became self-educated with an impressive library.

"He wrote wonderfully," says the Yale-educated McCullough. "He was a good speaker. He knew the welfare of his people (soldiers) and he kept that utmost in mind. He had known failure. The best leaders are those who have experience with failure...". ...

Henry VIII is his only rival. When the English reader gets that part of Lean's history, he knows that the chap had a real problem with the emotion thing.

Divorce is a British habit nowadays, of course. But an essential skepticism about it comes from Dr. Johnson, who, seeing a man who had been unhappy in marriage but re-married immediately after his wife died, thought that "it was the triumph of hope over experience." Lean's father and mother separated when he was in his teens, and on doing so the father quit his religion in the fear that the divorce would be looked at askance by other Quakers.
