And in this season, as the leaves pile up around the small white flags placed in the ground along the fence on Great Road, the members of the Saylesville Meeting House can pause and, again, let their own thoughts and feelings guide them. A person who is not a Quaker can do exactly the same thing.

There are 3,000 flags. There are more than 100,000 small stones purchased at a Lincoln quarry and arranged near the slanting stone slab where members used to step down from their wagons. And there are about 20,000 purple ribbons intertwined in the fence.

The flags signify the American dead in Iraq and Afghanistan. The stones represent the Iraqi dead, a number that no one seems certain of. The ribbons are for the wounded.

There is no message, just an invitation to stop and consider.

“It’s just been bothering me, the war’s been bothering me,” says Christina Bertoni. “I just really had to maintain an open perspective. It’s just gotten clear that this is a real sad endeavor.”

She is a professor at Rhode Island School of Design. She is a “tender” at the meetinghouse in Lincoln. And she was waiting for someone to do something, to come up with a way to express concern and invite discussion. Then she decided she should do something herself. She mentioned it at a Sunday meeting. ...
