Humanitarian Assistance/Community///On a mission to help others/Whittier Daily News/Whittier/CA/USA/14-Aug-05/... "CARINA SASS loves helping people. In fact, her friends and colleagues all agree that when it comes to helping people, Sass was born for it.

No surprise then that Sass, 45, of Whittier has been awarded Cal State Long Beach's Staff Community Service Award for 2004-05.

"Whatever task she is working at, she honestly throws herself into her work,' said Rex Jones, pastor of the Whittier First Friends Church, where Sass attends services. "It is no surprise she won this award.'

Sass started doing volunteer work more than 15 years ago. She was working on master's degree in speech communication at Cal State Fullerton at the time, and her husband Jim encouraged her to start volunteering to relieve the stress of graduate school.

So Sass began volunteering at the Volunteer Center of North Orange County. Before long, she discovered that helping others is her mission in life.

"I liked volunteering and helping,' she said. "Everything interested me, and I wished there was a way I could help everyone and do it all.

"I realized quickly that one person can't do everything. Community service is about changing people's lives, and you can't do that with just one person.'

So Sass started working with others interested in volunteer work, helping match their talents with causes where they could make the biggest impact.

"I noticed this is where I was most effective and it was the best possible way to meet the needs of many people rather than just a few people,' she said. "If I step back and encourage 100 people to tutor children, then 100 children will benefit.'

Today, Sass utilizes her talents as assistant director of Cal State Long Beach's Community Service Learning Center, where part of her job is to work closely with students and local community-based organizations.

"We work with students who are interested in receiving that hands-on experience that comes from working within the community,' she said. ...
