SEATTLE - After years of welcoming homeless people to sleep on their property, a Quakers worship group in north Seattle has evicted its guests after a number of incidents involving violence and drugs.

The Quakers who meet in the University District decided the homeless visitors were not respecting their beliefs about personal accountability and opposition to violence, and that closing down the camp was the only answer.

They also feared for the safety of the children in a preschool that rents space in the Quaker building.

"As Quakers, we recognize there is that of God in each person," says Warren Ostrom, the group's clerk and spokesman. But "there was a change in our welcome" when the homeless repeatedly broke rules. Ostrom said they did not use force to send the homeless away. ...
