Smith, 18, of Great Falls, returned earlier this month from his adventure in Israel as a humanitarian volunteer with the Religious Society of Friends, otherwise known as Quakers. While Hezbollah militants and Israeli forces traded blows to the north, Smith was connecting with people in the Palestinian territories to the south, working at a refugee camp and living with a Palestinian family.

"By far, they are some of the friendliest people I have ever met," Smith said. "I felt really safe there. The biggest worry I had was the Israeli soldiers but even that wasn't incredibly extreme." ….
