Peace Activities/Vigil/Fox, Tom/Tom Fox Held Hostage by Militants/Winchester Star/Winchester/VA/USA/30-Dec-05//….“Obviously we would much prefer to have him home and to hear some good news,” said Anne Bacon, clerk of Hopewell Centre Meeting in Clearbrook, where Fox attended. “But the fact that nothing bad has happened yet gives us hope that we have some more time.”

Local residents who know Fox describe him as a loving and gentle man who believes in his cause.

An active Quaker, Fox is a member of Langley Hill Meeting in McLean and attended several services at Hopewell Centre Meeting on Hopewell Road.

Members of both meeting houses have held prayer vigils, holding Fox and the other hostages “in the light” to seek God’s protection.

They have also released appeals to Fox’s captors. “Tom Fox lived among us and was our friend. ... He came to Iraq armed with love to wage peace,” said one statement.

The Association of Muslim Scholars, an influential Sunni clerical group, has joined in the call for the release of the hostages.

And students at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg held a candlelight vigil for Fox and the other hostages.

Bacon said they hope the hearts of Fox’s captors will be changed by the numerous prayers and calls for release.

The Hopewell group holds vigils at the meeting house every Wednesday. …..
