Quaker History/Abolition/Progressive Friends/Cox, John and Hannah/Look beyond the gardens on next visit to Longwood/Reading Eagle/Reading/PA/USA/11-Jan-07//The first is actually outside the gates of Longwood. It is the Chester County Visitors Center now, but more importantly it was once the meeting house of a group of Quaker abolitionists known as the Progressive Friends. As it was on the land of their leaders John and Hannah Cox, and as their land was known as “Longwood,” it became the Longwood Meeting.

Built in 1854, the present building played a role in the Underground Railroad movement of escaped slaves.

Inside the Gardens, however, is another building that is more directly associated with Longwood, the du Pont family estate than Longwood, the old Cox property.

Then again, the oldest house on what is best known as a du Pont property was built in 1730 by prosperous Quaker farmer and amateur botanist Joshua Peirce. His so-called “Peirce's Park,” which featured an array of trees collected by Joshua and his brother, Samuel.

In 1905, Pierre du Pont purchased the building and land as his family's weekend residence.

A short walk off the main walkways of the Gardens, the house should not be missed as it represents the very historical core of those Gardens.

Peirce's horticultural exploits notwithstanding, the house became the true birthplace of what is now known as Longwood Gardens when du Pont built a duplicate of the building to the north of the original in 1914. The twin structures were joined by an elegant conservatory. It was one of the architectural seeds from which the Gardens grew. ...

Quaker History/Abolition/Kay//Ask... the Director of historic properties/Philadelphia Inquirer/Philadelphia/PA/USA/14-Jan-07//The history of Croft Farm dates back to the 18th century, when early owners of the property utilized its proximity to Cooper Creek to build mills on the waterway. For the next 200 years, from 1697-1897, a vibrant milling industry on the site earned both the Kay and Evans families their livelihood. In the mid-1800s, the property functioned as a station along the Underground Railroad as the Kay family, Quaker abolitionists, helped usher runaway slaves to freedom.

In the 20th century, the Croft family used the property solely for agricultural purposes. Cherry Hill Township purchased the property in 1985 not only to preserve a piece of the township's past, but also to serve the recreational, educational and cultural needs of the community. Croft Farm has been listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places since 1999. ...

Quaker History/Redemption/Control/Naylor, James/We can turn ourselves around/Palladium-Item/Richmond/IN/USA/13-Jan-07//Early Quaker James Naylor wrote that whatever we choose as our redeemer will become our master. If this is so, we should choose well. That which we attempt to use to free us from whatever we feel compelled by -- fear, approval seeking, a need for safety -- will, indeed, literally control us. And people use many things to feel OK; money, sex, power, drugs, status, religion, alcohol, personal appearance, plastic surgery and work are just a few.

Yet another way to translate "salvation" is 'to be made whole', and 'repent' simply means to turn around. We can attempt to use things to make us whole, or we can simply turn around and be made whole. And that adventurous journey of spiritual formation, beginning anew each day, accompanied by God and each other, is worth every fear left behind upon the way. ...
