Religious Faith/Christianity/Christ /Silence/Religion A to Z: Q is for Quaker/Dallas Morning News/Dallas/TX/USA/28-Apr-06/ Members of the Religious Society of Friends are also known as Quakers. The Christian movement was founded in the 1650s by preacher and mystic George Fox in rebellion against the Church of England's authority. Critics named the group Quakers, mocking how members trembled at the power of the Holy Spirit.

In general, Quakers believe humans have the inner light of Christ and don't need church structure to gain access to God. They refuse to bear arms, and they shun oaths and sacraments. In the U.S., there are three branches of Quakerism; their worship styles differ. Some meet in silence, speaking only when moved by the spirit. Others have adopted a more programmed style, similar to American Protestant church services.
