The common sight of young boys, "ragged and barefoot," with "no idea of usefulness," stuck with Williamson his entire life. When he was 85, and had established himself using the disciplined work ethic of the Quaker doctrine as one of the wealthiest men in one of the 19th century's wealthiest cities, the successful businessman and savvy investor decided to give the young men of the Philadelphia region an opportunity to learn skills that would, with hard work, forever free them from the constraints of poverty.

With a $2 million gift, Williamson established the school in 1888, one year before his death. Built on a 220-acre campus in Middletown, the school remains true to the vision of its founder....
