“It’s also one syllable,” says Chuck Fager, the director of the Quaker House in Fayetteville, “which is shorter and punchier” than Charles.

Fager, technically a Charles, started calling himself Chuck as a teenager.

“Chuck just sounded much better,” he says. “Charles always sounded like it was more formal.”

And, he admits, Chuck did feel “like it was a little more macho.”. ...
